YOUTH SEEKING ATTENTION

“Seeking attention is a form of approval”

Asking for love and acceptance from family members and teachers is the act of seeking attention. For humans, seeking attention is a common behaviour. Youth attention seeking is not new; social media has simply made it more convenient.

The majority of parents throughout the world lament that their children are estranged from them as a result of social media.

Most parents lament the fact that their kids are reluctant to share personal information with them.

I want to deliver a message to our great parents as I am a young person myself;

Adolescents and teenagers don’t want to chat with you all the time because they don’t want to disturb you, so please bear with us. To support your family, you must work all day regularly delivering upsetting news, to parents looks unfair.

Since they believe approval is the best way to stand out, young people frequently stay on social media platforms to do so. This shouldn’t be permitted often because it merely makes young people depressed.

Silence and rage are the two main ways that young people express their emotions. Yet the majority of parents view it as impolite behaviour. Any unkind behaviour from kids should not be encouraged by parents. But they should also endeavour to correct them in the best way possible.

Talking to their parents or guardians will be challenging for the majority of the younger generation who is bullied. They do this to relieve anxiety in most individuals.

Most of the younger generation that experience sexual assault find it challenging to speak. Nobody likes to be publicly shamed and ridiculed on social media.

The entire universe is like a horrible web. You become entangled and cannot escape. Because of this, the majority of individuals, from both the older and younger generations, seek solace on social media.

MENTAL HEALTH DISORDER IS NOT MADNESS

Mental health disorders are a wide range of disorders that affect a person’s mood, thinking, and behavior.

People often think that once a person is mentally unstable, they are totally out of their mind. Humans choose to be ignorant when it comes to learning. A person who has psychosis should not be used to classify all forms of mental health disorders.

TYPES OF MENTAL HEALTH DISEASE

Schizophrenia

Bipolar illness

Dementia

Development disorder

Anxiety

Depression

My mental health awareness is going to be about all forms of mental illness, but for the next few weeks, I will be talking about depression.

Depression is the most common mental health issue, but not the only disorder. Others won’t be neglected.

According to the WHO, 300 million people have depression worldwide. Women are more affected than men. Note: I am not trying to be partial; depression can affect all genders, ages, and races.

A person is said to be depressed if they have the following symptoms:

Sadness

Loss of interest and pleasure

Feelings of guilt

Low self-esteem

Disturbed sleep

Fatigue

Poor concentration

Did you know that there are different types of depression? These types of depression vary in symptoms too. They include;

•Persistent depression: depression that has lasted at least two years.

•Postpartum depression: This condition primarily affects women after giving birth.

•Psychotic depression: a person has depression coupled with delusion.

The number of young people affected attracted me to this niche. WHO surveyed that one in seven people aged 10–19 years old experienced one or more mental health disorders. And the majority have depression, which is not being treated, leading to suicide, which is also the fourth leading cause of death among youths.

You might be wondering why I am talking about only youths. Well, they are going to be full-blown adults someday and if such mental health conditions are left untreated, they will extend to adulthood. This leads to such a person’s having an unfulfilled life.

Let’s go through this awareness journey together and give mental health the recognition it deserves. As Glenn Close said,

” What mental health needs is more sunlight, more condor, more unashamed conversation.”

MENTAL HEALTH IS UNDERRATED

” There is a crack in everything that’s how the light gets in” – Leonard Cohen

Health does not only mean a person has to be physically fit. Mental fitness is also a form of good health. But it is so invincible that you might be wondering why. Well, this is due to the stigma attached to it. When someone is mentally ill, they think the person has to be mad or something, right? I used to think that too, as well. And I know a lot of us are guilty too.

According to the World Health Organization, about one billion people have mental health disorders and 75% don’t get treatment due to the horrendous label attached to them. And about 50 million Nigerians have mental health issues. I.e., 1 in 4 Nigerians has a mental health disorder.

“Mental health” is a state of well-being in which an individual realizes their abilities and can cope with the normal stress of life.

A mental health disorder is not just one type of illness; it is a general term that is used to classify any disorder affecting mental stability. For example, anxiety is a type of mental disorder just like how malaria is a type of disease spread by mosquitoes.

Did you know that only seven psychiatric hospitals are available in Nigeria? This means that there are very few psychiatric specialists available. Wow! This is low compared to the number of hospitals for physical health. We put all the blame on the government. They have their faults, I agree, but we, the citizens, also share part of the problem. Let me explain. Most households in Nigeria will have parents who don’t value your mental health. Parents will say things like, “How can you have a mental health issue?” What are you thinking about? You don’t have a family yet. But they all seem to forget that we are also humans with our own emotions.

Mental health is invincible, but with awareness, our parents can have the right mindset.

“Passion is a catalyst for success” – Aisha Mohammed

This is my first time in the content creation field. I have always loved writing since my childhood. I remember writing short stories in my books in school and giving them out to my friends to read and they loved to read them Also, I got a chance to write again when I was in high school. My English teacher gave us a project to write a story. She also gave me good compliments. But, I never dared to share my thoughts and stories with a large crowd because I was scared of criticism. It sounds like a silly excuse right?

I think it is time to put my fear aside and never let it consume me. I want to push myself forward because I am my best inspiration and motivation for success.

I will be creating content for the next 30 days on mental health and tips to be healthy mentally.

Kindly, follow me through this wonderful journey I have ahead.
